Where to find positive news in 2017

I’m not going to sugar coat it; this week has been and will be particularly dire when it comes to good news. From the increasingly distressing Brexit situation, to the upcoming presidential inauguration in the US, you could be forgiven for thinking that the world is unraveling around you.

The “fake news” phenomenon has increasingly become a point of debate and whilst I will not deny that this issue seems to only be getting worse, I also think it’s worth discussing the other biases in popular media — namely the trend for catastrophic reporting and sensationalist headlines.

I do think it’s very important to take in a wide spectrum of media, which is why I try to read widely and challenge myself to unpick articles written from opposing viewpoints to mine.

Increasingly though I find myself feeling extremely anxious and overwhelmed when trying to take in the news. Even reading the front page of the Guardian (probably my biggest source of news, could you tell…) leaves me feeling deflated and defeated at the moment.

Despite bad news being almost ubiquitous on every platform, there are still places where you can go to find out about all the amazing, inspiring and uplifting things that are happening in the world!

Because good things are happening everywhere, even among all of the awful and horrific events of the 21st century. (Literally the second I was typing this sentence a notification appeared on my phone that Chelsea Manning is to be released from prison in May!)

So whilst I have resisted putting in a corny quote so far, I no longer can keep it up. Please indulge me this once…

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared
